compiling custom linux kernel
Published by kfiducia February 20th, 2005 in News, va2.0, Uncategorizedwell a lot of the reason i ever buy expensive toys is to learn something from them. my camera taught me a lot about photography, my laptop - slacking off in class, basic stamps -pbasic language and microcontrollers, well, you get the point.
my latest investment may actually end up paying for itself in addition to teaching me a few things. for those of you that dont live close enough to hear it …

this is my new toy. its a dell poweredge SC1425 1U rackmount server. if you must know: single 2.8Ghz Xeon 1GB RAM 80GB SATA (x2) swRAID1.
well, this round is teaching my all about the joys and pains of linux. which in all honesty is one of the best OSes i have ever used. although it has a steep learning curve. it also sometimes couldn’t be easier. wanna install the newest version of your favorite app? its pretty much as easy as typing ‘install app_name. aside from the less than stellar productivity levels of a command line as far as browsing the web and editing photos ( yes i know linux has a great UI too) it is a really well built easy OS. the guis seem to just slow you down if you know what you are looking for, and the ability to interface with apps is SOO much easier. if you want to create a user, you can pretty much just make a form to collect the info for the user and have a script compile the command and send it to the command line, then just pipe the results back to the UI. (MS are you listening?) talk about a major advantage over windows admining, i know windows2k server in and out and know there is no friendly way to do a lot of the stuff, other than MSs bloated UIs or faulty imports.
so basically, linux, will you go steady with me?
[update] - all you jerks that are going to ask me if im cheating on OSX - all those features are available, PLUS a rock solid GUI, im just adding that linux is cool all by itself. so maybe ill just take linux to spring formal and keep chillin with osx the rest of the time… decisions decisions.
yes, ive resorted to amusing myself :-/
by talking to myself. and replying to myself. im tired, give me a break. ive been up all day and all night staring at linux.
not cuz i think its hot, but because im trying to config the swraid. thanks dell, for making FAKERAID!!!
wow kyle. just wow.
I just can’t say enuff about those GUI interfaces - you just have to be careful about R AIDS
Linux and I have been on and off for a while now. We had some time off after the VAIO incident but, oh my gawd, I think it, like, wasn’t even Linux’s fault. I feel like such a monster.
Some say Linux is high maintenance, but it’s worth it. Linux is easy when you get down to it. Windows is all bling (cheap bling at that) with no soul. Linux is real, you know? Windows is just a poser.
Between OS X and Linux? Well, OS X is classier, more refined, and even easier. You know, like an Ivy League girl. That doesn’t mean it’s better, though. Linux is pretty rough and knows how to party.
Mac OS X needs some pretty strong coersion to really let loose. I’m not talking about being unsafe, just wild, y’know? Yeah, linux is pretty much a rocker out of the box. Giddyup.
