OH NOES!!

Not more iPhone news!!! yeah, i had to. after getting up before 9AM (must be serious right?) to hit up the Apple store to get my very own iPhone, i was first of all disappointed that they sold out at 9.20AM, about 10 mins before I got there; but what was even more disappointing was when i got my hands on it to try out the functionality, so I HAD to share the iPhone’s really really fatal flaw.

Let me just jump into why I am NOT buying an iPhone. The phone does NOT receive calls when you are using the edge data service. Thats right, google maps, safari, stock quotes, email, they all effectively render the phone part of the iPhone useless. This is not like when Apple released the 5G iPod and escaped the criticism of poor video codec support etc by saying “this is still an iPod meant to play music, we just added this video stuff as a little aside because we could,” No, this is now an iPhone, and its main job is to be a phone, the only way I am going to toss my rather rock solid phone (with zero features) is for a phone that does its main job just as well or better AND has more features. I liked the rest of the phone, even though I could tell the keyboard would take a bit and the mail i hear is deplorable (from engadget’s review) (seemed okay to me).

So here is how I tested the iPhone: first I tried calling the phone while it was doing nothing, worked fine. Next, i turned OFF the WiFi, another call, no problem, next i fired up Safari and loaded apple.com/iphone tried calling again, … … straight to voicemail. What?! Yeah, I tried closing safari, waiting, still no connection, waited and waited, finally the apple rep rebooted the phone, ALAS it received a call. Okay, so fired up safari again, and back to no calls. Sending calls still worked fine. But it would still not receive calls even after having made one. I repeated these steps on another iPhone to confirm the behavior. The apple rep who was re-syncing all the phones for the day was just as surprised and disappointed as I was, as he scrambled through all the settings trying to find an explanation. I looked, I tried to get the phone to answer, I wanted to get this phone, I wanted it to be good enough to switch, but this device needs work before I trade in my brick.

Got a fix? Post in the comments.

this is kinda scary…

Lexar Tech Support

When doing a live-chat online with tech support I had the following conversation; I just think Hima’s last question is a little too obvious…

the end of the semester

brings also the end of my BSEE, and probably one of the most enjoyable experiences of that BSEE was the senior design project. not so much because it was fun to do but because i got to actually apply some of all this theory that gets thrown at us over 5 years. honestly i learned more about EE in this one project than i did in all 5 years of classes. in case anyone is interested i built a little web page for our project that attempts to explain the functionality and at very least show some pictures to show off the hot PCB we made.

bandwidth usage

i few days ago a got an email from my hosting provider (which is me) notifying me that i have gone over my allocated bandwidth. so after about 30 minutes scouring the stats i couldn’t come up with anything that would account for the significant increase in traffic, http traffic anyway. but i did manage to find out that some of my more bizarre articles like the milk content one, which bill thought was a huge waste of his time, get a lot of searches for some reason. i’m not going to try and figure that out. im just hoping i didn’t leave a script wide open for allowing some hax0rs to steal my bandwidth.

in other news my last assignment for the semester is due monday. let me rephrase that a bit, the last assignment ever for my undergraduate degree is due monday. in case the point is getting lost. i graduate soon.

since my mum asked me to do the whole commencement thing i figured i may as well have a little party for everyone so i can invite a lot of people to give me a pat on the back and an “atta boy” - i hope no one does that… and to thank all my friends and family for whatever it is that they may have done to help me get to this point in my life. so if you are reading this you should probably come and eat my food next saturday may 5.

nostalgia

i think i should go back to this design.

my special skills

apparently i can consistently throw my shoes 90 degrees around corners.

also; will and i were having a discussion: what makes dairy products go bad? he said its the fat content in the dairy products that causes them to expire, so i suggested that whole milk should go bad the fastest. anyway, after a brief search of the interweb with no answers, we decided we would grace humanity with an answer.

so here is what i found from the interweb:

…you can restart that [expiration date] clock … by simply bringing milk to a boil and then storing it in a clean container, i.e., not back in the original carton. [Kathryn Boor, a professor of food science at Cornell University who specializes in dairy microbiology], said that milk’s fat content has no effect on how quickly it goes bad. Source: vindy.com

So, my hypothesis is that all the milks will go bad at about the same time regardless of the expiration date. So what would cause a faster expiration if it isn’t fat content? Well, for that you would have to know what the bacteria metabolizes in order to survive, and that is the milk sugars which it turns into lactic acid. The increased acidity causes the milk to curd. So unless whole milk has a higher milk sugar concentration I will say my hypothesis should be correct. Source: wikipedia.

Will is not going to revise his hypothesis based on the interweb of power, and sticking with the whole milk going faster because of the fat content, which he concedes is wrong.

Post some theories so when the testing is over we can see who wins the prize (the rancid milk).

armed robbery

seriously? hand over a few bucks or get cut? i gotta say, i would rather just give them the money than risk dying. esp when its probably papa john’s money.

On February 2, 2007, at approximately 1906hrs, University Police officers responded to the Pegasus Landings Apartments, in front of building #2 in response to an armed robbery. Two unidentified white males robbed a Papa Johns delivery driver at knife point. The victim tried to escape after being confronted, however the two suspects were able to corner the victim and demanded his money again. The victim refused to hand over the money, in which he was subsequently cut with a razor-type knife.
